"Gli scozzesi Jesus And Mary Chain dei fratelli Jim (canto) e William (chitarra) Reid vennero prepotentemente alla ribalta negli anni '80 con un sound al tempo stesso melodico e rumoroso che riprendeva l'insegnamento della Sister Ray dei Velvet Underground con un pizzico di angoscia in piu` (e forse una perversione del "wall of sound" di Phil Spector) e che avrebbe causato una rivoluzione di portata mondiale. Fu con loro che nacque infatti il movimento degli "shoegazer", forse il piu` importante in Gran Bretagna dopo il punk-rock.

Iniettando dosi massicce di distorsioni, i Jesus And Mary Chain divennero i piu` acuti rinnovatori della canzone melodica. In seguito il gruppo ha ripiegato su quello stesso pop che avevano contribuito a rendere obsoleto. In un certo senso, i Mary Chain hanno pero` coronato in tal maniera la loro missione, che era stata quella di ricondurre all'ovile pop anche l'eresia dei Sex Pistols.

Il gruppo si era formato in Scozia e aveva esordito con i singoli Upside Down (1984), Never Understand (1985), You Trip Me Up (1985), Just Like Honey (1985). Lo stile era sempre lo stesso: accordi elementari, ritornelli orecchiabili e riff arcinoti venivano stravolti dai feedback sguaiati della chitarra e immersi in atmosfere allucinate e lisergiche. La leggenda venne alimentata da una serie di esibizioni dal vivo sotto l'effetto di alcool e stupefacenti e da altre avventure scandalistiche."
